Like the wind
The deepest profile carbon clincher in the BOYD lineup, the 90c is sickly fast. If the appeal of dropping minutes of your course times appeals to you look closer at the BOYD 90c. At wider yaw angles (12-19) the 90c finds equilibrium and produces negative drag. A toroidal rim shape smooths airflow in crosswinds allowing predictable steering and bike handling. The profile, stiffness and outright speed is well suited to Tri and competitive Time Trials.
Exceptionally stiff and responsive wheels is result of the wide flange hubs, 2x cross rear lacing, Sapim CX Rays and some of the best hand built built "out-of-the-box" wheelsets on the market.
BOYD uses an exclusive rim mold, that means no one else are using these profiles (not even alibaba!), they have been tested in the wind tunnel and produce exceptionally low drag numbers. They are 23.5mm wide at the top of the brake track and 24.4 towards the bottom, the rim curves outwards at the sidewall to produce the torroidal shape. The increased width increases tyre volume, straightens the sidewall for a firmer feel on the tarmac and smooths the transition to the rim sidewall. You get more comfort, better looks and a faster wheel in varying wind conditions.
The rims feature a unique combination of resin and carbon that raises the Tg or Glass-Liquid Transition temperature of the brake track, essentially raising the temperature before the composite matrix becomes unstable or in cases you may have seen sidewalls collapsing from the resins melting. This new resin along with their developed Onyx brake pads help manage heat under heavy braking and improve cold braking modulation. Braking is modulated, smooth and quiet and performance in the wet is predictable. BOYD ran a lab test with 17Kgf of braking force off and on in 4 second intervals and ran this test for 20hrs, the temperatures never rose above 68c.
Rim tape, Boyd skewers and Boyd Onyx Brake pads are included with wheelset purchases.
Sapim CX Ray spokes are laced 2x on the driveside and non-driveside rear - having the Non-driveside 2x laced builds a wheel that transfer torque 15% better, essentially a wheel that is rock solid under the gas. Front wheels are radially laced and cornering is precise and accurate. External Sapim Black brass nipples are used throughout. Built by hand in the USA with calibrated tensionmeters. Each and every wheelset is ready to be raced right out of the box. Leave the snap, crackle and pop for your breakfast cereal.
Exclusive rim profiles, well thought out hubs and proudly hand built in the USA from start to finish. A very deep 90mm profile suitable for Tri, fast crits or road races and Ironman races. Looking for seconds? The 90s produce negative drag at 12.5 to 20 cross winds. Free speed? Almost, with these numbers you will be using less energy maintaining the same average speed - which leaves that little bit in the tank to take the sprint finish.
You still want the speed on super windy days, then pair the 90mm rear with a 60mm front to help stabilise the front wheel in gusty conditions
Rims
Rims are 23.5mm wide which is inline with the latest trends - Firstly it increases tyre volume and straightens out the sidewall, secondly it creates a smooth junction from the rim to tyre sidewall. The 90s have an aero profile with a blunt trailing edge which allows smooth airflow at wider yaw angles, so in gusty or windy conditions steering is stable and predictable as the air is allowed to flow over the rim. The 44mm deep profile spin up and accelerate well on climbs and holds it speed on the flats making this one of the most versatile wheelsets on the market. The rims designs are exclusive to Boyd with stealthy looking decals which are under the clearcoat.
Braking
Boyd Wheels feature a unique combination of resin and carbon that raises the Tg or Glass-Liquid Transition temperature of the brake track, essentially raising the temperature before the composite matrix becomes unstable. This feature along with their developed Blue Ice brake pads help manage heat under heavy braking and improve cold braking modulation. Braking is modulated, smooth and quiet and performance in the wet is predictable. The brake tracks are 23.5 on the whole series of wheels including the aluminium, allowing you to swap wheels without messing about with pad adjustment.
Hubs
A custom designed hub maximises flange spacing, increases spoke bracing angles and provides maximum bearing support - A wider base for a 3-point structure is going to be more stable. The 90 hubs have some of the widest flange spacings on the market. Stiff and responsive, a difference that can be felt on the road. Rear hub is 11speed and is backward compatible with the included 1.8mm spacer to run a 10speed cassettes. Smooth spinning hubs are contributed to high quality bearings and a neat bearing pre-loader ensuring there is no binding in the bearings.
Spokes
Spokes are laced 2x on the driveside and non-driveside - having the Non-driveside 2x laced builds a wheel that transfer torque 15% better, essentially a wheel that is rock solid under the gas. Front wheels are radially laced and cornering is precise and accurate. Sapim Black brass nipples are used throughout
Boyd wheels are all hand built in the USA by experienced builders, they come true, pre-tensioned so they are ready to race out of the box. Boyd is focused on top-notch build quality so your wheels last longer and feel better on the road.
