The more inline your feet are the more muscle recruitment and stability gains you will get. This is no different to standing up or seated on a bike. We also know driving through your heels recruits larger muscle groups and reduces fatigue in small muscles when you are driving through your toes (or balls of of your feet)
Not just the biological performance gains, the shorter crank is lighter and is less likely to get caught up on the trail. We know that lower bottom brackets improve cornering and stability but at the cost of crank clearance. Free your ride.
